A few minutes of checking before checkout can prevent unwanted renewals, account compromise, and avoidable disputes.

Confirm the amount, currency, billing frequency, taxes, and renewal date before submitting a payment. A monthly subscription and a one-time payment are not the same thing. Save the confirmation page or email so that you can later compare it with your statement.
Use strong, unique credentials
Never reuse an important password across sites. A password manager can generate and store long, unique passwords. Enable two-factor authentication whenever it is available, preferably with an authenticator app or security key where supported. Keep recovery codes somewhere separate from the account itself.
Minimize exposed information
Provide only information the service genuinely requires. Avoid saving payment details on shared devices. Do not send card numbers, one-time codes, or identity documents through direct messages. Legitimate support staff should not need your password or authentication code.
Know how cancellation works
Before subscribing, find the account settings and cancellation policy. Take a screenshot or save confirmation when you cancel. Deleting an app may not cancel a subscription that is billed by a website or app store; check the original billing channel. If charges continue after cancellation, contact the merchant and your payment provider with dates and records.
Respond quickly to a problem
If you suspect account access or payment fraud, change the password from a trusted device, secure the email account connected to it, revoke unfamiliar sessions, and contact your bank or payment service. Do not wait for a suspicious charge to repeat. Keep all communication and transaction references.
